Flooring Like… Corkoleum!

Whether you’re renovating a San Francisco rental or laying down hardwood floors and carpeting in your new Bay Area loft, you’d ideally like to use reclaimed materials not only to prove your green cred but also to enhance the aesthetics of your place.

Flooring manufacturers have certainly caught the “green wave,” and you can now find floors made from a variety of reclaimed materials, such as…

1. Vinyl

Vinyl is simple to clean, comfortable, and pretty stain resistant. It’s also a cost-effective material, and you can find floors in a seemingly endless variety of patterns, colors, and styles. There are also luxury vinyl options which mimic hardwood floors, marble floors, stone, and beyond. Buzz-phrase to remember: “Vinyl is Versatile.”

2. Carpeting

Carpet remains the Big Kahuna in the market. But just like vinyl choices have diversified, so, too, have carpet choices. You can find reclaimed carpet made of the most unbelievable stuff, including corn, new polymers, old transformer toys, hub caps, and belly button lint. (Okay, we made a few of those up! But, still, the diversity of materials is astonishing.)

3. Corkoleum

Cork grows on trees, so it’s naturally sustainable, and producers can harvest the bark repeatedly without harming the plant. Corkoleum mixes attributes of linoleum floor products with natural cork to create a versatile, eco-friendly material. Cork flooring also has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, according to boosters.
