What To Expect This Winter

Water Droplets on Window Falling to Hardwood Floor

Subtle changes in wood moisture cause obvious defects in wood floors. In many cases, these defects require hardwood floor water damage repairs. Here are some of the most common issues you may notice if your hardwood floor experiences a moisture problem.

1. Crowning.
Crowning occurs when the top of a floor plank absorbs moisture, which causes the center of the plank to rise above the edges.

2. Buckling.
When considerable amounts of moisture cause the floor planks to lift off the sub floor by several inches, the floor is said to be “buckling.” Depending on the severity of the issue, hardwood floor restoration or replacement may be required.

3. Cupping.
Cupping occurs when the underside of the floor plank absorbs moisture or the top side of the floor plank loses moisture. In either situation, the edges of the floor plank rise above the plank’s center.

Problems with moisture may lead to a number of problems, ranging from water leaks to wet planks at the time of hardwood floors installation. If you aren’t sure how to resolve the problem, a hardwood flooring expert can help.
